We’re really sorry, but tonight’s gig at the Water Rats is postponed due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control. It will be rescheduled for later this Autumn and all advance tickets sold through the band will be honoured.

In the meantime we’re getting together tonight for a rehearsal in London, if enough of you are interested we’ll do a private set, just for you! xx

Community! Fusion

Love fundraisers.* Next month we’re taking part in one that’s a little bit different.

Community Fusion is a new charity venture in Portsmouth, a youth volunteering programme that aims to match young people to community projects. The volunteers benefit from personal development, learning and CV-worthy experience, while important, local, community-centred projects are helped and supported by those young people in the immediate area.

It’s a great scheme and one of the first projects is the regeneration of the Hilsea Lido complex. This iconic open-air pool opened in 1935 and quickly became a loved landmark and even featured a miniature railway at one stage. At the end of the last century however, it fell into disrepair. Step in the Hilsea Lido For The People trust, who purchased a 99-year lease on the pool from Portsmouth Council. They’re slowly but surely reviving the lido’s fortunes, refurbishing it and creating a social and cultural nexus for the whole community.

To mark this new collaboration and raise funds, there’s going to be a big family-friendly party / BBQ on Sunday 14th August. I’ll be playing with the band, as well as Huw Olesker, Luke Ferre and Hannah O’Reilly. There will also be face-painting, magic and apparently, sun. That’s the Blue Lagoon, Hilsea Lido, London Road, Portsmouth, Hants, PO2 9RP (Map). Doors are from 1pm – 6pm and I have no idea when we’re on yet (plus it’s a big ole party) so get there early!

*Anyway, here’s a quick video of Stewart Lee talking about charity (go to about 3:00 if you have a terminally short attention span):

Hjaltalín – rare UK appearance

Big treat for everyone in London tomorrow, as Icelandic septet Hjaltalín come to visit us for a rare gig, the culmination of a national tour (so they should be super-tight). Last year’s Terminal was full of unexpected arrangements and quirksome hooks (think Neil Hannon producing a Björk LP with a brass section in tow) and one of my favourites.

Have a quick listen now, on Spotify. Words like lush, cinematic and winsome all apply, but I think there’s enough Skandinavian willfulness there to keep it interesting, too. See ‘Hooked on Chilli’ or ‘Feels Like Sugar’. Great, isn’t it? So I’ll be seeing you at the Slaughtered Lamb in Shoreditch (MAP – tube Farringdon or Old St – one of my favourite venues for this kind of complex-arrangement music) tomorrow, 7pm on Tuesday 8th March. Oh, it’s a God Don’t Like It-curated show too, so the support act are going to be ace.

Soton Unstaged – Thursday

hi everyone,

(sorry for bad typing, weird catalan keyboard disaster epic)

a quick reminder that this week there are loads of gigs happening in weird places courtesy of Soton Unstaged / SMILEFest (more)

I´m playing the Thursday show at the Quilters´ Vault, as is Anja McCloskey. The gig is 7pm – 9pm only (don´t know when I´m on within that). i think they´re filming it too for the uni TV, so best frocks only please.

The vault is a cool medieval bolthole on the High st below bar — down near the isle of wight ferries where Unit 22 used to be. if you don´t know where that is there´s a map here.

i´m going to be playing a bunch of old and new stuff, totally acoustic, the demos from the album basically. it will be good. if you want a sneak peak of some of the album tracks go here. and if you want a full prelisten email me and i´ll send you a soundcloud link.

hope you can make it!
joe xx
